Are clothes for dogs just silly, frivolous notions of celebrities and ditsy heiresses? Some people can’t imagine why on earth anyone would put clothes on a dog. Some people may even laugh at pet parents who go the extra mile to dress up their pal. Even though dogs have survived just fine for thousands of years without wearing human clothes, it doesn’t mean dogs don’t need to wear them. On the same hand, humans survived for thousands of years without electricity and other modern conveniences, so obviously there’s always room for improvement in our lives and those of our dogs.
Over the centuries, various breeds of dogs developed adaptations to suit certain climates. For example, the Chihuahua originated from the warm climate of Mexico and developed characteristics to help them survive in the hot weather, such as big ears to help dissipate heat and very short hair to keep cool. As a result, Chihuahuas lose a lot of body heat and are sensitive to cooler temperatures. Chihuahuas will often shiver in temperatures which are quite comfortable to us. In fact, most toy breeds are sensitive to the cold because their tiny bodies don’t generate enough heat due to low body mass.
The right shirt or jacket can provide protection from the elements. A nice raincoat can keep your dog from getting completely soaked on those rainy days. Keeping your pet dry is a win-win situation for everyone. You can go on walks with your dog on rainy days, you won’t need to spend time drying your dog once you get homeorendure wet dog smell. Last but not least, your pal won’t suffer from feeling cold and wet. With the right outfit, your dog will stay cleaner, warmer and drier in inclement weather. A warm jacket, coat or sweater can really help short-haired breeds remain warm and cozy on cold, blustery days. It is not realistic to assume a Boxer or other short-haired breed will be warm enough in winter snow. Many breeds can benefit from a snuggly warm sweater, not just tiny little dogs.
In the warmer months, a cool cotton t-shirt or dress can allow your dog to play in the sun for hours without getting sunburned. Yes, dogs are susceptible to ultra violet rays and sunburn, too. You can even apply bug repellent to your dogs clothes instead of applying directly on the dog. Speaking of bugs, a dog shirt can act as a barrier against biting insects such as mosquitoes, ticks and flies. Anything we can do to improve the lives of our companions is a good thing!
