Is your dog suffering from extreme itchiness? Do they have rashes and bald patches on their skin? If so, your pet may be suffering from a food allergy. This is an annoying condition in which proteins from their food are seen as ‘invaders’ by their bodies. As a result the body tries to defend itself through its usual mechanisms, a process that results in discomfort for the animal.
Fortunately, when it comes to canine illnesses, food allergies are not serious or life-threatening. It is possible for your dog to live a long and happy life with this affliction… you just need to know how to treat it. And, with the prevalence of hypoallergenic dog food, treatment can be accomplished quickly and easily.
So, how does hypoallergenic dog food differ from traditional dog food? It depends on how the manufacturers create it. If they design their dog food based on old-fashioned approaches, they will use ingredients that are not found in most dog food brands. In the past this meant that hypoallergenic dog food was full of lamb. But now that lamb has become a more commonplace ingredient, manufacturers usually go for duck or venison. Either way, the dog doesn’t really notice a difference, since these meats are still palatable.
Newer versions of hypoallergenic dog food may abandon this approach altogether, using the same ingredients as any other brand. But with them, they alter the proteins in such a way that they become unnoticed by the dog’s immune system. And usually, this approach works. Best of all, it doesn’t require usage of meats that might be more expensive for a manufacturer to use.
Yet, don’t do as some and think that hypoallergenic dog food is a panacea. While it can work wonders for food allergies, it can’t do anything for other issues, such as fleas or sarcoptic mange, (an inhalant-based allergy). So, get your vet’s advice before starting your pet out on a hypoallergenic dog food diet.
